Scott and Friday top Common Entrance

Abigail Scott of the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School, Kingstown, and Christian Friday, of the Paradise Primary School, Bequia, are the top performers in the 2010 Common Entrance Examination, which concluded on Friday 4th June.

Abigail earned the number one position with an overall percentage of 95.75 to Christian’s 95.20%.
At a press meeting held on Wednesday 16th June, 2010 Minister of Education Hon Girlyn Miguel gave an analysis of the final examination.

She disclosed that 2161 wrote the exam. Those registered to write the exam numbered 2196.
“The proportion of students who met the prescribed standard was 57.61% with the comparative figure for the year 2009 being 51.27%; forty- five (45) students earning in excess of 90% of total marks,” the Minister revealed, adding, “the highest total score for the examination is 95.75% ...., compared to 94.35% in 2009.”

According to the Minister, the highest individual subject performances were: General paper, 98.33%; English Language, 94.09% and Mathematics, 100%.

Forty-five students in this year’s exam earned in excess of 90% of the total marks.

The analysis also revealed that out of 1119 males who wrote the examination, only 560 or 50.04% met the required standard. Of the 1042 females writing the exam, 685 or 65.74% met the standard.

Ten students, three males and seven females, scored a perfect mark (100%) in Mathematics.

In addition to the exam, students would have undergone a process of assessment, beginning at the Kindergarten level and then at Grades 2 and 4.

Powa girls have been topping common entrance,cxc and a levels a long time now,isn't it time we elect a prime minister a girl/woman can be safe around? Or a female pm to be even safer

The girls and guys studied hard and passed that had nothing to do with gonsalves,there are exams even Ralff can't pass so stop giving him credit he doesn't deserve..Potential and rights are GOD given,that doesn't have a thing to do with a scumbag p,m

Iverson James, no I am not NUTS.

It is his VISION of UNIVERSAL ACCESS to SECONDARY EDUCATION, and so PUTTING EDUCATION at the CENTER of his VISION to DEVELOP and MOVE this NATION FORWARD, is what has led to HIGHER and HIGHER ACHIEVEMENTS by our STUDENTS.

Dr. GONSALVES and his ULP GOVERNMENT BELIEVES in EDUCATION being CENTRAL to the DEVELOPMENT of SVG. Moreover, is the KEY to UPWARD MOBILITY and so this will lead to a PROGRESSIVE abd EDUCATED SOCIETY. We're now seeing SIGNS of this taking SHAPE....his VISION is PAYING OFF.

The NDP did not BELIEVE that this could HAPPEN and so they WANTED to WAIT until the year 2030 to FOCUS fully on EDUCATING our KIDS and YOUNG PEOPLE.

LUCKILY for our NATION, we have a LEADER in Dr. Gonsalves who BELIEVE in our PEOPLE and who BELIEVE in his VISION and LEADERSHIP and so he said YES WE CAN. It can be DONE NOW instead of WAITING for 2030.

Of course, the HARD WORK of the STUDENTS, with ASSISTANCE from their TEACHERS and PARENTS, ENABLED them to do well on their EXAMS. But if it wasn't for Dr. GONSALVES' VISION, which has GIVEN them to OPPORTUNITY to SOAR LIKE EAGLES with their WINGS UNCLIPPED, the RESULTS that we have been SEEING could not be REALIZED.

So KUDOS to the EDUCATION REVOLUTION of the ULP and KUDOS to the TEACHERS who WORKED HARD to GIVE OUR KIDS the MATERIAL that have ENABLED THEM to do GOOD on their EXAMS. But MOST IMPORTANTLY, KUDOS to our STUDENTS, who Dr. GONSALVES had a LOT of CONFIDENCE, for their HARD WORK and DEDICATION to EDUCATING THEMSELVES. And NUFF RESPECT to their PARENTS as well for BEING there for THEM.

Yes, the EDUCATION REVOLUTION is MAKING our SOCIETY more EDUCATED. When you have an EDUCATED SOCIETY, the BACKWARD POLITICS of the NDP will be EXTINCT like the DINOSUARS.

NO LONGER will you be ABLE to COME will FOOLISHNESS and LIES as your STRATEGY to win ELECTIONS. IT will be all about the REAL ISSUES. If you have no POLICIES, PROGRAMS, PLANS and VISION that our EDUCATED SOCIETY could look at to see if you're SERIOUS about GOVERNANCE, such a PARTY will be LAUGHED out of POLITICS.

BUH BYE NDP.

James .. you are the one sounding lit a nut case asking if the pm helped her to study..such ignorance. You seem not to know the role of government. There is no doubt that a lot of things happening in st vincent was and is the vision of the present PM including the changes in education. The PM and his government role in this issue is not to sit down and study with the kids silly, it is to put in place the very structure that allow our students to achieve at the highest level..Yes you have the right to an education but any one can provide access to "education".. its the quality of and the ability to properly facilitate the process that is the difference....am sure you have the potential to be smart but how can you do it without the tools?????

During the 17 years of governance of the then BACKWARD NDP GOVERNMENT, only about 38% of VINCENTIAN STUDENTS had the OPPORTUNITY to ATTEND SECONDARY SCHOOL, now every SINGLE STUDENT has the OPPORTUNITY to attend, thanks to the POLICY of UNIVERSAL ACCESS TO SECONDARY EDUCATION for all STUDENTS of the ULP GOVERNMENT.

Moreover, the average percentage of students who passed common entrance under the then NDP government was basically in the 30’’s.

Today, with even more CHILDREN, especially POOR PEOPLE'S CHILDREN, we have seen the average has soared to 57% and still CLIMBING under this REVOLUTIONARY and VISION ULP GOVERNMENT, thanks to the LEADERSHIP of PRIME MINISTER Dr. Gonsalves.

It is he who said he wants to see our YOUTHS SOAR with their WINGS UNCLIPPED. It is he, as LEADER of this NATION, who has always STRESSED the IMPORTANCE of an EDUCATION and we’re seeing his VISION being realized.

It is that KIND of POSITIVE and MOTIVATIONAL LEADER, the likes of Dr. Gonsalves, that this NATION NEEDS, not the KIND who always seems like he is ANGRY and doesn't GET his FACTS STRAIGHT before he comes on the AIRWAVES to make a FOOL of himself. Speaking of course about the HEADLESS and LEADERLESS Arnhim Eustace.

VIVA TO THE EDUCATION REVOLUTION and to our HARD WORKING STUDENTS and their EXCELLENT TEACHERS for a JOB well done.

Over 600 VINCENTIAN STUDENTS GRADUATED YESTERDAY.

I am so PROUD of my PEOPLE....PROUD of the EDUCATION REVOLUTION of this ULP GOVERNMENT...and PROUD that the VISIONARY BEHIND IT, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, was there to WITNESS our STUDENTS SOAR LIKE EAGLES with their WINGS UNCLIPPED.

Community College increases intake by 30%

Since an Act of Parliament five years ago paved the way for the four post secondary educational institutions be brought together under one umbrella to form the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, tremendous strides are still being made some five years later.
At the first ever amalgmated graduation ceremony of the Teaching, Nursing, Technical and Vocational and Sciences and General Studies institutions, Director of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Community College Dr. S. Joel Warrican stated that ceremony “is just another milestone in the unfolding history of what we envision will be a great institution.”

Delivering the Director’s report, Warrican said persons must think about the institution’s ubiquitous presence on the national front and its contribution to the development of the nation’s people.
In the 2008-2009 academic year there were 1,484 students enrolled at the College. For 2009-2010, there were 1,921, which represents an increase of almost 30% over the previous academic year.
In the Division of Technical and Vocational Education, in 2008-2009 academic year, 409 students pursued studies in that Division. This academic year, there were 763 students, which represents an 87% increase over the previous year. “In order to accommodate this increase, five temporary classrooms were constructed at the Division, and additional staff was hired. Indeed, ten additional faculty members were brought in, taking the size of the full time staff from 26 to 36,” Warrican noted.

The Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies has also experienced some growth with 497 students being admitted to the division this year, a 26 per cent increase over the number in the previous year. The total enrolment figure at the Division now stands at 806.

In last academic year, there were 506 entries for the Cambridge Advanced and Advanced Subsidiary level examinations, with 380 passes, securing a pass rate of 75 per cent. The CAPE examinations, saw 996 entries, with 887 passes, securing a pass rate of 89 per cent. This year, there were 285 subject entries at Cambridge and 1682 at CAPE.

According to Warrican, 35 students were enrolled in the Division of Teacher Education in the Primary Education programme, 20 more than 2008-2009. Eighteen students were also enrolled in the secondary programme this year.

Registered Nursing; Midwifery and Nursing Assistant, were the three programmes offered this year in the Division of Nursing Education. At the end of the academic year, this division had a total of 183 students. The Division had three cohorts of students at various stages of the Registered Nursing programme. There were 49 students in the first year and 43 in the second year. Pass rates for clinical examinations fell between 70 and 75 percent.

Additionally, 36 students successfully completed the final year of the Registered Nursing programme and, along with 6 others from the previous cohort of students, went on to write the qualifying Regional Examinations in April. Of these 42 students, 26 were successful.

Shedding light on some of the upcoming initiatives by the college, Warrican noted that workshops are planned for the upcoming academic year, starting at the end of August. He further stated that in an effort to increase access to the programmes, the College will be extending its opening hours from September. The new opening hours will be 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. “These extended hours will not only accommodate more students, but also non-traditional students...In the past, the College has focused on new school leavers...we are widening our scope to include people who are employed and who need to upgrade their qualifications, prepare for a job,” Warrican said.

Apart from the Associate Degrees offered in Division of Arts, Sciences and General Studies, all the certificate programmes offered in the Division of Technical and Vocational Education will be converted to Associate Degrees. This change is designed to make the qualifications earned by our students more viable.

VINCE, anytime I see you make those kind of SHORT posts, it means that you WANT to come out and PRAISE the GOVERNMENT and its VISIONARY LEADER, Dr. GONSALVES, for their EXCELLENT WORK, but your DIEHARD NDP MINDSET would not PERMIT U.
