RADIO STATIONS need to STOP PLAY POLITICS with our VULNERABLE MUSIC INDUSTRY. If we're to ADVANCE and COMPETE with the MAJOR PLAYERS in the REGION, we cannot have RADIO STATIONS PLAYING this BACK AH BUSH game of who or who should not be HEARD on their AIRWAVES.

There is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING PROGRESSIVE about that KIND of POLICY, because it is only going to LEAD to BAD BLOOD BETWEEN RADIO STATIONS and ARTISTS against ARTISTS. When that happens, you're going to be left with a FRACTIONAL LOCAL MUSIC INDUSTRY.

So how is that supposed to BUILD the MUSIC INDUSTRY in SVG?

COME ON PEOPLE, STOP MIMICKING the PRACTICE of others in the REGION. STOP BEING A FOLLOWER; BE a LEADER!!!
PRESSURE, I CONCUR with MOST of your SENTIMENTS.
Are we going to get back into that bassa bassa with radio stations banning certain artistes music?...I hope not! Pressure, you raised an interesting point; I am not sure what exactly is the solution of getting new artistes on the scene...I think there is no clear national policy or guideline on how we go about things within the music industry in Vincyland; and everyone do their own thing and answer to no higher authority but the almighty dollar.

But, at the same time, do you have info to make a case that this will be a challenging year? ...on the face of it..irrespective of Vincy Mas, I think in general new artistes always have a challenge to make the proverbial "breakthrough"... I understand your position; but what make you feel this Viny Mas is more challenging than previous times? Or are you just making a general observation that new artistes DO NOT GET THE SORT OF AIRPLAY COMPARE TO THE WELL KNOWN ARTISTES?
IF YOU ARE A NEW ARTIST, YOU ARE GOING TO STRUGGLE OUT OF THE GATE UNLESS YOU HIT A HOME RUN IN YOUR FIRST AT BAT.......TOUCH IS ONE GROUP THAT COMES TO MIND IN THAT REGARD, AS WELL AS BLAKSAND. BOTH THESE GROUPS TOKK THEIR LUMPS IN THE FIRST COUPLE YEARS BEFORE MAKING BEAUTIFUL MUSIC AFTER ABOUT FIVE YEARS ON THE SCENE. SOME ARTISTS ARE THE EXCEPTION........BUT FOR THE MOST PART ITS GOING TO BE TOUGH SLEDDING FIRST TIME UP
Pressure, from what I heard is that there was a certain big boy DJ from Grenada who started all what you spoke about, but I heard that he left HOT 97. He was not a production expert [meaning he knew nothing about mixing] but unless you gave him your Songs to mix, it would never ever get air play. Powa, I notice you are balance when you post on matters of culture. LOL
There is also the silly ongoing WAR with HITZ and HOT; This I find most childish. Both Stations fight for the control and right to play certain Artiste tunes exclusively, and when an Artiste Song plays first on either Station, that Artiste Song will never play on the other Station. I think that HOT and HITZ are responsible for this cultural debacle.
Nice Thread,Vince the man is a Trini ( I fed up correct you now eh...(lol),yea now he gone lets see if there is going 2 be any improvement at the station come carnival time.Hitz Vs Hot War is personality clash which is not good for us at the moment.

i HATE when some programme manager speaks about vetting a song...do they do this to all the crap that comes out of Jamaica?
PRESSUE, I LISTENED to your TRACK and I MUST SAY that it is not my CUP OF TEA, so to SPEAK. Your song might have a niche audience in the sense that those people who like to WILD OUT" might get a CHARGE out of it. But I can ASSURE you, your song is not going to be playing at any GREAT SIGNIFICANCE in the home or in a vehicle, because it is SIMPLY not that KIND of RELAXING music.

Maybe that is not the DIRECTION that you want to go with your MUSIC anyway. Maybe it is JUMP UP FETE scene that you're looking to have your song being heard. I really do not know.

But if you're looking for your SONG or MUSIC to have a SHELF LIFE, I can ASSURE you "WHAT IS A TSUNAMI" is not the DIRECTION to go. Your song is what is called DISPOSABLE MUSIC. Meaning, it has no SHELF LIFE.

For EXAMPLE, it MIGHT get a BLIGH during CARNIVAL, but outside of CARNIVAL, it is time to DISPOSE of it, because it is not a SONG that one is going to play in their HOME or in their RIDE, thus does not have LONGEVITY.

Do not get me WRONG, there are so-called DISPOSABLE MUSIC that has GIVEN MANY ARTISTS the EXPOSURE that they need during the CARNIVAL season and so they're able to get more EXPOSURE in the REGION and BEYOND. But instances of this occurrence is EXTREMELY HARD to come by.

Songs that have to do with JUMP and WAVE, RAGS in the AIR and FLAGS in the AIR are what are called DISPOSABLE MUSIC, because of LACKING LONGEVITY. It is basically CARNIVAL MUSIC. CARNIVAL MUSIC has no sustenance outside of that arena.

If you're looking to just make CARNIVAL MUSIC then MORE POWER to you. However, "WHAT IS A TSUNAMI" is not the song that will GIVE U that INSTANT CREDIBILITY that you're LOOKING for. For your SONG to really CATCH ON, it has to be FORCED on the LISTENING PUBLIC. Meaning, deejays will have to PLAY it OVER and OVER and OVER for it to CATCH on. And since you're a NEW ARTIST, it is likely not to happen.

I am not trying to DISCOURAGE you in any way, shape or FASHION, but you asked for my OPINION and I am just giving you my GENUINE ASSESSMENT of it.

I can tell a VERY GOOD SONG from the very INSTANT I HEAR it, "WHAT IS A TSUNAMI" is not it. But I can ACTUALLY SEE YOUNG PEOPLE "WILDING OUT" to it at an OUTDOOR FETE.

Again, I do not want you to get DISCOURAGE, because I can THINK of MANY SONGS that should not have been getting numerous spins on the AIR, because in my OPINION, those songs were SHIT. But because the ARTISTS are KNOWN, the DEEJAYS FORCED the SONGS on the LISTENING PUBLIC to the POINT it just sticks in their heads.

A NEW ARTIST will have to come with a SONG of EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY to really BREAK DOWN that DOOR of ACCEPTANCE on the AIRWAVES.

For EXAMPLE, take a song like "TURN ME ON" by Kevin Lyttle. That was an EXCEPTIONAL SONG of QUALITY and so DEEJAYS had no CHOICE but to PLAY it. Even if they did not like Kevin Lyttle, the SONG could not be DENIED. So it is in that VAIN that you need to FOCUS on when you're TRYING to KICK DOWN that DOOR.

I think the FLAG WAVING and RAG WAVING (WORKOUT MUSIC) kind of SONGS are on its way out. FRANKLY, it OVERSTAYED its WELCOME some 16 YEARS AGO.

As GREAT an ARTIST as SUPERBLUE was, he, FRANKLY, has been RESPONSIBLE for the WATERING DOWN in the QUALITY of SOCA MUSIC when he said "GET SOMETHING AND WAVE" way back in 1991.

It is that SONG that KILLED the VOCAL and LYRICAL QUALITY of SOCA MUSIC. Some of these songs that we have been BOMBARDED with for close to two DECADES, and I am talking about the POPULAR ONES, could have been WRITTEN by a FIVE YEAR OLD.

I said that to say this, I am not a FAN of JUMP And WAVE MUSIC (I NEVER WAS), because I find the VAST MAJORITY of them are RUBBISH/GARBAGE/SHIT. That TYPE or STYLE of MUSIC has STUNTED THE GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT of the SOCA INDUSTRY, because you cannot SELL that KIND of MUSIC to an INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE, PERIOD.

If Machel Montano could not do it, NO ONE WILL. JUMP AND WAVE songs basically made SOCA MUSIC FEEL SEASONAL. Meaning, it is only around CARNIVAL TIME you hear that TYPE of MUSIC.

That said; it is our RAGGA SOCA STYLE of MUSIC is what has LONGEVITY and which has the POTENTIAL to MAKE it INTERNATIONALLY. So you have a CHOICE, continue making DISPOSABLE SONGS or MOVE in a DIRECTION where your MUSIC has the POTENTIAL for LONGEVITY...the CHOICE is yours.

By the way, I will leave you with a song from JOHN KING of Barbados from wayyyyy back in the 90's ( BELIEVE it was 1995) that touches on some of the issues I raised in my post.

de powa of vincy thanks for ur comments and advice however am not sure if u realise dat soca music of today is done in many diffrent ways ........ if u feel to jus chip down d road den u hav d songs for dat ,,,,,, if u feel like really winein an grovin den there is d type of soca for dat an if u feel like jus jump an wave be hype an get on bad den there is d type of soca for dat eg tsunami. d beast let go by skinny fire by bunji malfunction by fireman hooper an d list goes on. wat is important for an artise to do is to bridge d gap where dey sing d diffrent modles of soca so dey can b more marketable. is vybz kartel an movado music d kind ull play in ur car or house ...... guess not ,,,,, but we r influnce by d djs rite ......... so we play dem where ever. marcheal mantano is d greats soca star ,,,,,,,,, take a listen of d type of soca dat he start out wit .... those wit energy rite . so am not offened but my style of soca is appeallin to an aduance dat jus cum to move an get on bad free up dem slef. after vincy mass is lucia carnival den crop over den grenada ,,,,, an d list goes on u hav carebbanna laubour day ,,,,,,,, so carnival is never finish for an artise an there is always d ppl who cum out jus to wave an get on bad
PRESSURE, if Machel Montano was a VINCY, ANTIGUAN, GRENADIAN, etc, he would not be who he is today, PERIOD.

Do not get me WRONG, he is a GREAT STAGE PERFORMER, but most of his so-called HITS are CRAP. These songs have no SHELF LIFE WHATSOEVER, but because of who he is, his SONG will ALWAYS GET AIRPLAY. And because of his VERY LARGE FAN BASE, people will buy his SHIT MUSIC because DEEJAYS will CONTINUE to play his SHIT MUSIC.

He is who he is. And the fact that he is from the so-called MECCA of SOCA, he is able to get away with what is CLEARLY MEDIOCRE SONGS.

Machel realizes now that he cannot get to the NEXT LEVEL with that STYLE of MUSIC and is now LOOKING to make MUSIC that Kevin Lyttle took the WORLD by STORM with. He has a song that I RATE IMMENSELY called "ONE MORE WINE."

It is SONGS of that NATURE is what will give him the KIND of INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE that he so DISPARATELY WANTS. But maybe it is too late because he is not a YOUNG CHICKEN anymore.

That said; Kevin Lyttle was a TOTAL UNKNOWN before "TURN ME ON," even in certain QUARTERS of SVG, but because of a SONG that had REGIONAL and INTERNATIONAL APPEAL he was ABLE to take the GLOBAL MARKET by STORM.

The MERE FACT Kevin Lyttle was an UNKNOWN artist probably led to the BACKLASH against him n the SOCA INDUSTRY because many SOCA ARTISTS and DEEJAYS were JEALOUS and ENVIOUS of his RISE to FAME because he never so-called PAID HIS DUES.

So I am saying to you that if you're just looking to make CARNIVAL MUSIC then continue with making songs like "WHAT IS A TSUNAMI." But if you want to make it OUTSIDE of SVG, a song like "MAKE A TSUNAMI" is not going to do it. But I am still ENCOURAGING you to STICK to your CRAFT....just continue to IMPROVE LYRICALLY and VOCALLY and you might get that ONE SONG that will give you the exposure that you're looking for.

Anyhow, let us look at the VINCY ARTISTS who have really MAKE IT INSIDE and OUTSIDE SVG to SEE WHICH SONG got them the EXPOSURE that you're HOPING will come your WAY.

1. PROBLEM CHILD - PARTY ANIMAL

2. JAMESY P - NOOKIE

3. POORSAH - HAIRY BANK

4. ZOELAH - GO DOWN LOW

5. Bomani - I AM SOCA/WET

6. LUTA - BUSY TONE

7. Skinny Fabulous - HEAD BAD (ON THE SPOT) - EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCTION, especially the INTRO...TRULY HYPED.

8. FIREMAN HOOPER - ANACONDA

9. Kevin Lyttle - TURN ME ON

10. Skarpyon - LOOKING FINE

PRESSURE, do you notice a PATTERN? The VAST MAJORITY of those SONGS are not so-called "CARNIVAL SONGS." These are songs that can PLAY ANYWHERE, INSIDE and OUTSIDE of the CARNIVAL SCENE, because they have SHELF LIFE and INTERNATIONAL APPEAL

I am not telling you what to do, but if you want to go down the ROAD of so-called CARNIVAL songs, I am saying to you that the QUALITY has to be BETTER than TSUNAMI, especially if you're looking to make to other CARNIVALS in the REGION or outside the
REGION.
