Angel Haze is on the come up. After building her buzz with a series of popular mixtapes and EPs, the Detroit-born Brooklynite is working on her Universal Republic debut Dirty Gold, due this spring.
The 21-year-old, born Raykeea Wilson, shows some skin in a Marc Jacobs Mickey Mouse top and underwear in the pages ofInterview magazine, and shares her infatuation with Eminem, whose song “Cleanin’ Out My Closet” she remixed on her latest mixtape Classick.
“I was irrevocably smitten with him because of how honest and brash and blunt he was—and how much of a fuck he didn’t give,” she says of Slim Shady.
While she may be a rapper, she envies the rock star lifestyle. “There are so many criteria you have to meet if you say you want to be a rapper,” she explains. “With rock stars, it’s about how crazy they are. They get to do whatever they want.”
Despite her sudden success, the “New York” MC was not quite prepared for everything fame brings. “I don’t think anyone—regardless of how cocky they are—is ever prepared for this.”
Angel will get another taste of the spotlight when she joins Major Lazer and Cat Power on a North American tour, which kicks off January 29 in New York
